Each cycle completed in the vineyards of the Eugénio de Almeida Foundation in Évora corresponds with the return of an opportunity to create new wines with a “Cartuxa” character and profile. Inevitably, there is the expectation that nature has been generous to the vines that grow the grapes destined for the future Pêra-Manca Red, allowing excellent wines to be produced.
2018 was a year in which, after a cold and dry winter, it benefited from a cold start to the spring with generous rain. The end of spring and the beginning of summer were quite mild in temperature, causing maturation to progress slowly. Despite the heat wave felt in the first days of August, the Aragonez and Trincadeira old vines, whose development and memory allow them to adapt to extreme phenomena, responded with a “maternal” instinct, protecting their fruits and leading them to a maturity that immediately indicates an enormous potential.
With careful fermentation and 18 months of aging in French oak barrels, followed by a further 4 years in the bottle in the cellars of the Cartuxa Convent, the Cartuxa winemaking team gave its final approval for the 2018 vintage of the Alentejo icon, Pêra-Manca. It is a wine with notable complexity and aromatic intensity that is dense, deep, and elegant, with a maximum expression of what we believe to be the wine-growing Alentejo.
It is with great pride and a sense of responsibility that the Eugénio de Almeida Foundation announces the launch of this unique wine in October 2024.
